The second problem — and I raised it first
The companion article was about the plastic connector inserts an Australian buyer sent me.
But that conversation had a second problem in it — and this time I was the one who named it, not him.
I looked at the photos and wrote back: the previous factory rushed to ship, the paint hadn't fully cured, and the temperature inside the container was extreme.
He replied — that's correct.
Then he added that the shipment had cost them a sale.
I didn't guess right because I'm clever. I guessed right because this trap is common — common enough to recognise on sight.
One — how hot a container gets, and the hottest part may not be at sea
ISTA (the International Safe Transit Association, a transit-packaging test body) ran a well-known study — the Ocean Container Temperature and Humidity Study (Leinberger, 2006) — tracking real routes for a full year with data loggers.
The measured range: interior temperatures from −29 °C to +57 °C, and relative humidity from 19% to 96%. Inside the same container, a piece sitting high or low, at the edge or in the middle, sees different conditions.
57 °C. That isn't "a bit warm." That's putting furniture in an oven.
But the most counter-intuitive finding is this: the most extreme temperatures showed up on the land legs — trucks and yards — not at sea.
That's worth remembering. The moment your goods are truly cooked is likely the staging yard before loading and the truck after arrival. "It's fine once the ship sails" is an illusion. And those legs are outside anyone's control — nobody is watching.
So whether a piece of furniture arrives intact isn't decided at sea, and it isn't decided at the port. It's decided before it goes into the box, in the factory.

Two — what happens when the paint hasn't cured
A surface finish needs time to cure — not just dry to the touch, which is only the surface. Curing all the way through takes far longer.
If a piece is stacked and pushed into that oven before the finish has cured:
- Where panel meets panel, it sticks.
- When separated, the surface takes a mark.
- At worst, the whole shipment's appearance is gone.
That isn't a transport accident. It's a decision the factory made — the decision to chase a few days of schedule.
And here's the insidious part: it looks completely normal the moment it leaves. Your inspection, your photos, your pre-shipment video all pass. The problem grows at sea.
Three — our practice: let it sit in the workshop an extra week
After spraying, our finish typically sits for about a week to cure fully before it goes into the container.
There's no technology in that sentence and no patent. It's just a decision: we don't trade that week for lead time.
It's also why the production time we quote is 30–45 days rather than one of the tidier numbers you see on some quote sheets. That week is counted in, out in the open.
We aren't the fast one. We're the one whose goods arrive the way they left.
Four — a layer of EPE foam between every two panels
Flat-pack (KD) means a piece travels as a set of panels stacked together — a storage shelf unit, for instance, is mostly large flat panels. Panel rubbing against panel is the most ordinary, and most damaging, source of transit wear.
Our practice: a layer of EPE foam between every two panels.
Not just the four corners. Not just the outer wrap. Between every layer.
The carton is corrugated board, and a rigid EPS foam frame goes around the edges — the EPE between the panels stops friction, the EPS frame around the outside stops impact. Two separate jobs.
It costs a little more material and a little more of a worker's time. But one panel arriving in Australia with a rub mark down its face means the whole piece comes back — that maths isn't hard.
Five — why we write these two things down
Because both are invisible.
Whether an insert is plastic or metal, you can see when the goods arrive. Whether the paint sat three days or a week, whether there's foam between the panels — you never see that.
